The Iowa women's track and field team had a busy spring break, with its head coach named, the NCAA indoor championships, and the beginning of their outdoor season.

In the first order of business, the athletics department officially named Layne Anderson as the head coach of the Iowa women's track and field.

Anderson had the interim tag removed from his title on March 14. Anderson had been an assistant for the previous four years under the late James Grant, as well as the head cross-country coach for the women's team the previous five years.

"Layne Anderson has been part of our program for the past five years," Iowa Athletics Director Gary Barta said in a release. "He was an outstanding assistant under the late James Grant, and as head coach of our women's cross-country team, he has elevated the Iowa program to a status that ranks among the nation's elite. I feel he is very deserving of the women's head track coaching position, and we look forward to his tenure as Iowa's head coach."

Alexander loneAll-American

Four Hawkeyes traveled to Fayetteville, Ark., to compete in the NCAA indoor championships on March 14-15. Senior Kineke Alexander was the only athlete to receive All-American honors, and with it she broke the Hawkeye women's track and field record for most career All-American honors with seven. Alexander finished fifth in the 400 meters in a time of 52.72 seconds after running a season best 52.63 in prelims.

"It's nice to know, but it doesn't really affect me," Alexander said humbly prior to breaking the school record. "I don't really even think about it."

Outdoor season begins

The Hawkeyes traveled to Conway, S.C., this past weekend to compete in the Shamrock Invitational, hosted by Coastal Carolina University. Seniors Tammilee Kerr, who competed in the javelin, and Meghan Armstrong, who competed in the 1,500 meter, posted regional qualifying marks while winning their events. Kerr had a toss of 148-9, while Armstrong won her race in 4:26.62.

Iowa had several other athletes who competed well; seven athletes - Kimberly Stanford in the 100-meter hurdles, Tiffany Hendricks in the 200 meter, Monica Mims in the 400 meter, Sarah Henize in the 800 meter, Krista Anderson in the 1,500 meter, Jessica Schmidt in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, and Caleigh Bacchus in the high jump - finished in the top ten in their events.
