According to reports, an investigation allegedly showed Johnston and Carter were in possession of stolen handguns they obtained from a Cedar Rapids gun show.

Johnston reportedly had a semiautomatic handgun, and Carter allegedly had a .45-caliber gun.

They were also each allegedly in possession of "one handgun that was obtained in Johnson County that was traced to a burglary in Muscatine County." Johnston reportedly obtained his from Coral Ridge Mall in Coralville and Carter obtained his at or near Broadway Apartments in Coralville during late summer or early fall in 2007.

Trafficking in stolen weapons is a Class D felony, punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $7,500.
