Dram shop is a strange term, referring to a serious subject. Its name is, however, about as outdated as the laws it refers to.
Dram-shop laws are aimed at placing the blame of any actions by intoxicated persons on the establishments that served them. A dram is a fraction of an ounce, and it was once a serving measure for alcohol. Along with this relatively ancient measure is a similarly aged measure of law - blaming bars for the actions of their patrons.
