Study: Iowa bridges deteriorating
Briana Byrd - The Daily Iowan
Issue date: 2/25/08 Section: Metro
Despite these findings, Stutsman said, officials in Johnson County are keeping an eye on the bridges.
"I think our bridges, for the most part - although there are some that need to be replaced - are structurally efficient and are not being replaced because of a lack of safety," Stutsman said.
Johnson County will spend more than $2.5 million for bridge replacements, according to the county's five-year road plan.
"As a supervisor, I feel pretty comfortable about the job we've done to improve our bridges," Stutsman said. "We monitor those bridges on a regular basis to make sure there hasn't been any negative changes in safety. We're pretty vigilant in making sure our bridges are doing what they should be doing."
Jacoby said that if more is to be done concerning bridges throughout the state, the public must decide.
"The public will have to decide how much we want to spend on our roads and bridges, because safety is No. 1," he said.
