In an effort to increase oversight of nonprofit organizations, the Iowa Senate is discussing a bill that would take an estimated $150,000 away from nonprofit organizations.
The attorney general would use this funding to hire another attorney and support staff to focus on problems nonprofit groups may run into - such as conflicts of interest, executive compensation, and their use of authority.

A bill in the Iowa Legislature aggravated some county sheriffs at the Statehouse last week, but an Iowa lawmaker said the bill is meant to protect them.
The bill, introduced in late January, could alter the criteria sheriffs would use in denying permits to own concealed weapons. Rep. Clel Baudler, R-Greenfield, one of three members on the subcommittee handling the bill, said some sheriffs are getting the wrong idea.

Students may be happy when classes are canceled, but many faculty members have concerns about the effect of such an action, which has occurred twice this year.
Expressing this concern, the UI Faculty Council unanimously agreed at its Tuesday afternoon meeting to form a task force to delve into the various issues of class cancellation.
