Sophia Grace Mellecker is 26 days old today, and her mother, 15-year-old Meghan Mellecker, is "cherishing every moment."
Mellecker became pregnant when she was a freshman at Iowa City West High, and she is one of the millions of teenagers each year who become pregnant in the United States.
"When I found out I was pregnant, I was half scared to death and really excited," Mellecker said. "Sometimes, I didn't know what I was going to do."

A recently released study sheds further light on the bias against Mormons, attitudes that some say could affect Republican presidential-nomination hopeful Mitt Romney.
The scientific poll from Vanderbilt University found "a significantly more intense" bias against Mormons than that against blacks or women.

On a cold and snow-speckled Friday afternoon in Iowa City, outspoken City Councilor Dee Vanderhoef sat comfortably in her Iowa City home, sipping coffee and smiling while recollecting some ups, downs, and career plans.
An Iowa resident for more than 40 years and a member of the Iowa City City Council for 12 years, she says that after having three kids, working as a nurse, and traveling the United States with her husband, a U.S. Air Force pilot, the City Council was not on her to-do list.

A suit filed by the state Board of Regents intended to keep employment records out of the hands of the UI graduate-student union was dismissed Monday, and the issue will be settled through arbitration.
But the Campaign to Organize Graduate Students has filed a complaint with the Iowa Public Employee Relations Board contending that the UI never intended to honor that part of the contract when it first signed it.

The Iowa City School District recently expanded an off-site temporary school program aimed at helping students who have committed violent acts in school to hold 15 students instead of 10.
Although City High has had twice as many fights as West High in the past trimester, City High Assistant Principal Bernadette Thomas said West has at least seven off-site students, and City High has none.

The Iowa City city councilors on Monday addressed a request by Councilor Bob Elliott to consider ways to increase funding for the city's police and fire departments.
The council decided to adopt a new resolution before the end of the calendar year, placing it on the agenda for tonight's meeting.

The scores of two standardized tests in the Iowa City School District this year failed to meet proficiency requirements under the category of reading comprehension.
City High Principal Mark Hanson said that no single reason for the decline in test scores exists, but the School District did receive a crop of new students from outside areas, possibly bringing scores down.

The Iowa Supreme Court ruled Nov. 30 that the state's definition of an "Indian child" is an ethnic classification breaking the 14th Amendment equal-protection clauses in both state and federal Constitutions.
In the future, Iowa will have to come up with a new definition of what constitutes an "Indian child" - one that could possibly be based on tribal membership, UI law Professor Ann Estin said.

Iowa City police filed two more charges Monday in an alleged burglary against a man who already faces four charges in connection with a Nov. 29 burglary, authorities reported.
