A former UI associate professor of law plans to file a Title IX complaint against the university over the pink visitors' locker room in Kinnick Stadium.
Jill Gaulding, who spoke out against the pink locker room in 2005, said she plans to file the complaint because of the inappropriateness of the university's action in rebuilding the pink locker room during stadium renovations.

CEDAR RAPIDS - Republican presidential-nomination hopeful Mitt Romney called for restrained spending and reduced taxes while referring to the intensifying campaign in an appearance at Kirkwood Community College on Nov. 30.
"I think it's fundamentally unfair to tax people when they earn money and when they spend money and when they die," he said. "I will kill the death tax once and for all."

DES MOINES - Democratic presidential-nomination hopefuls fought ice and snow in Des Moines on Dec. 1, then voiced their positions on issues that deal directly with black and Latino voters.
The Brown and Black Presidential Forum, held at North High School, served as peaceful ground for the eight attending candidates to answer questions from the community. Immigration reform, health care, and education were the key topics.

CEDAR RAPIDS - Cathy May, a Democrat who lives here with her young children Bronwyn and Carter, says she came to see Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., on Sunday because she's still shopping for a candidate.
Normally, she's made up her mind by now, May said, but this year's Democratic field is a little lackluster. For her, Rodham Clinton's call to bring a friend to the Iowa caucuses on Jan. 3 in an effort to "make history" fell on deaf ears.

DES MOINES - Community members from across the country got the chance on Dec. 1 to speak their minds on such pressing issues as factory farms, immigration, and health care at the Heartland Presidential Forum.

A committee chartered to study a smoking ban at the UI will deliver its draft policy this week. It is expected to recommend a near total ban, and UI President Sally Mason is expected to sign it.
Susan Buckley, the UI associate vice president for Human Resources, and co-head of the committee, said some exceptions are being considered - Kinnick Stadium and the University Apartments are two that have been mentioned.

University officials say their decision not to open UI residence halls to students who wish to return to Iowa City to caucus is mostly a matter of logistics.
"At this point, we don't do it because we can't do it," said Von Stange, the director of University Housing at the UI.
