While the Iowa Hawkeyes cracked down on the Minnesota Golden Gophers last weekend, the Iowa City police were doing some cracking down of their own.

Officers ticketed more than twice as many underage individuals Nov. 9 through Nov. 11 when compared with any other home football game weekend this year, though officials say the increase wasn't due to an intentional police effort. (13) comments

Encouraging kids to walk or bike to school has been a nationwide effort for the past two years, and it's time to take it a step further, education officials say.

Officials of the Safe Routes to School program met in Michigan last week to determine these steps. Safe Routes - in coalition with the U.S. Federal Highway Administration - was created in May 2006 to encourage children and their families to choose alternate, more healthy forms of transportation in the morning. Iowa City School District Superintendent Lane Plugge will ask School Board members on Tuesday to approve a plan for a new elementary school.

The exact location of the proposed building has yet to be announced, but Plugge has said the facility will be located in the North Corridor. (0) comments

The UI is creating a monetary-incentive program to entice departments in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences to switch classes to Friday.

Under the proposed plan, which is designed to decrease binge drinking on Thursday nights, the UI school will pay departments $20 per student per switched class, officials said. (1) comment

Former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards spoke out against politicians who accept campaign donations from corporate lobbyists at a fundraising event for Johnson County Democrats Terrence Neuzil and Lonny Pulkrabek on Sunday afternoon.

Neuzil, a county supervisor running for re-election in 2008, said he is supporting Edwards largely because of the sincerity he perceives in the presidential-nomination hopeful. (2) comments

Joseph Buckwalter cannot remember how many times he has been ranked in the "Best Doctors in America" database - "quite a few times," he said.

The house felt the bust after the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission dealt Riverside Casino a pair of fines totaling $30,000.

Commission administrator Jack Ketterer said the amount the organization has fined Iowa casinos has remained the same, but with more casinos in the state, the potential for an increase in total fines has increased. He estimates casinos average between $100,000 and $200,000 a year in fines. (0) comments

Nude man draws slew of charges

A nude man allegedly broke into an Iowa Avenue residence Nov. 10, assaulting the occupants, and at one point tried to hold an officer in a head lock, authorities reported. (0) comments
