If the 21-ordinance is passed on Tuesday, UI students may see a few changes in how downtown drinking establishments are run.

Instead of only allowing 21-year-olds to enter, the Iowa City Council has also spoken briefly about ways to keep bars open to underage patrons. Splitting bars into sections of underage and of-age customers, creating specific evenings during which alcohol is not sold on the premises, and investing in identification scanners are some of the possibilities that bar owners may consider. For Arianna Criss, who was born at only 27 weeks, donning a tiny hat and bootie set is vital when her mother, Alycen Noel, holds her or changes her diaper outside of the incubator.
