"I think defense is the main goal, the main thing," Tate said. "Defense wins games. If we learn how to defend the way Coach Lick wants us to, we should be able to win a lot of games."
Lickliter is expected to decide on a starting five by Wednesday afternoon for Thursday's game, but he is giving no indication yet - either to the media or his players - which way he's leaning.
"No idea," Peterson replied, when asked who he thought would start. "If I had to guess, Coach Lickliter's going to play the people who play defense and who do not turn the ball over. Whoever's doing those things is going to get a lot of [playing] time."
The team is unconcerned with the many predictions that have Iowa falling into the Big Ten basement this season. Embracing their new coach's plan, the players are ready to prove skeptics wrong.
On Thursday, they'll get their first chance.
"You know they picked us to be last, but they did that last year, and we ended up being fourth in the Big Ten," Tate said. "We're going to do a lot of good things this season. I think we can make a lot of noise and surprise a lot of people."
