When Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm signed a bill in September that moved the state's presidential primary to Jan. 15, 2008 - just one day after the tentative date for the Iowa caucuses - she must have expected a fight. Because Michigan violated a Democratic National Committee rule barring states from moving their primaries ahead of any of the four hand-picked early states - Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, and South Carolina - the DNC asked all Democratic presidential-nomination candidates to refrain from campaigning in any other state, including Michigan, before the first Tuesday of February.
