After submitting a $2,000 funding request to the UI Student Government, the American Indian Student Association was initially denied funding because of concerns over the title of its event: "Anti-Columbus Day."

On Thursday, President Bush signed into law a new tuition-assistance bill aimed at aiding and unburdening students with need-based loans.
The College Cost Reduction and Access Act passed Congress on Sept. 7.
"I love the fact that this country is dedicated to helping people who want to realize a dream," Bush said in a statement, after signing the legislation.

Two local men are looking to make Iowa big - in the music world, that is.
Ian Mills, stage name Millz, and Renardo Wilson, his manager, joined forces four months ago not just to conquer the music world but to add some Iowa flavor to it as well.
"A lot of people don't realize that Iowa has a lot of talent," said Wilson, a UI senior economics major. "But the artists here don't put their name out."

The White House and Congress are locking horns over a health-insurance bill that would expand funding for state programs covering uninsured children.
In a 67-29 vote, the U.S. Senate voted Thursday to place a five-year, $60 billion State Children's Health Insurance Program extension on President Bush's desk. Calling the $60 billion, a $35 billion increase from the current program, too much, Bush has already promised to veto the bill.

The idea of spending his life practicing dentistry was first glued into 13-year-old De Stigter's head when he got braces. He said it was because he wanted to work in a field where he could help people.
