As the nursing crisis continues in Iowa, Gov. Chet Culver will sign a bill that sets aside $5.2 million specifically for nurses' wages.
But that amount is far less the $150 million required to bring Iowa's nursing pay up to the national average, said Linda Goeldner, the executive director of the Iowa Nurses Association.

Besides disgruntled smokers and bar owners - and beyond supposedly clearer lungs for patrons and employees - it seems there could be another side effect of Iowa's recently passed smoking ban: lower youth smoking rates.
That's if the results of a recent study in Massachusetts apply to Iowa.

UI graduate student Molly Kelley realized the importance of teaching English as a Second Language when she was a kid going to church.
Her church in Cedar Rapids gave sanctuary to immigrants until they got their visas. She said she started her linguistics interest seeing Mexican immigrants who were trying to scratch out a living and didn't understand the language.
