Daily Iowan reporter Nick Compton took first place in the William Randolph Hearst Awards' sportswriting contest last week with his "Running to the Future" profile piece on Iowa cross-country star Diane Nukuri.

Compton spent a "good amount" of the women's cross-country season interviewing Nukuri and compiling the piece. Her background - she is a native of war-stricken Burundi, a country in east-central Africa - was the basis of the profile.

"I'm very proud of how it turned out," said Compton, who now writes for the DI Opinions section, noting that "a lot of credit" goes to the photographers, page designers, and editors who worked on the piece.

"Obviously, it's a great honor to be recognized for something so prestigious," he said. "It feels good."

Compton learned about Nukuri's past - from the civil war in her native land, to her participation in the 2000 Sydney Olympics - through his coverage of women's cross-country.

"I picked up certain bits and pieces about her background," he said. "She had a phenomenal story that sort of needed to be told."

The Hearst Awards Program honors undergraduate journalism majors for work in several areas - writing, photojournalism, broadcast news, and multimedia.

Compton's article, published in the DI on Nov. 13, garnered the UI junior a $2,000 scholarship. The UI School of Journalism and Mass Communication, will receive a matching reward.

"This is an impressive and well-deserved honor for Nick," DI Editor Jason Brummond said. "Our staff exhibited great collaboration on the piece in print, online, and on Daily Iowan TV. The award is a great example of the progress we've made in the newsroom this year."

Past DI Hearts winners include: Brian Triplett, first-place column writing entry, 2006; Alex Lang, first-place spot-news entry, 2005; Tyson Wirth, third-place sports writing entry, 2007; Matt Ryerson, fourth-place photojournalism entry, 2007.
