This year, we'll actually have a white Christmas. Or at least an ice-covered one. Now that the scenery is set for a magical season post-finals, Hancher will provide the typical tunes with Holiday Pops Extravaganza today beginning at 7:30 p.m.

And in a true spirit of the holidays, the concert will feature collaborations among many area music groups. The Cedar Rapids Concert Chorale, Children's Discovery Chorus, Iowa City Girls Chorus, Cedar Rapids Symphony School Suzuki Violinists, and the Preucil School Espressivo Strings will all participate in tonight's show.

The collaborative groups will perform such seasonal classics as "Sleigh Ride," "Deck the Halls," "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing," and "Hallelujah Chorus," as well as the annual Holiday Pops sing-a-long and more.

The Holiday Pops Extravaganza show first took place at Paramount Theater of Cedar Rapids on Dec. 15 and 16 before moving tonight to Iowa City. Tim Hankewich, the second-year music director and conductor of the Cedar Rapids Symphony, prepared a few special numbers for the concert, which he has been working on all summer. Janelle Lauer, the first guest performer in Holiday Pops history, will perform with Roy Justis narrating the new pieces.

"There is something for everyone - sacred, secular, and inter-faith, designed to captivate young and old alike," Hankewich said. "As always, I love to provide a surprise or two along the way that will keep you talking about our concert for days."

The Cedar Rapids Concert Chorale has a nonprofit organization in the area for nearly 50 years. The other participating groups include the Children's Discovery Chorus, directed by Amy Hanisch, and the Iowa City Girls Chorus, directed by Ann Berry. The Suzuki violin students are from the Cedar Rapids Symphony School, in which musical instruction begins as early as age 3. Espressivo Strings is a group of Preucil School of Music violinists between the ages of 12 and 18.

While presenting the typical holiday repertoire, it's never too early to instill a love of "Winter Wonderland" in these young musicians - especially when it actually looks that way outside.
