Iowa City resident theater company, Dreamwell Theatre, will perform the latest in its series of plays this fall with this weekend's production of Kimberly Akimbo.

Director Brian Tanner said the company "has been wanting to do the play for a while."

"It has a lot going for it," said Tanner, who has been involved with Dreamwell for the past six years. The show's appeal, he said, comes largely from Akimbo's themes tying in well with the company's own goals.

"We've always tried to be a theater that pushes the envelope," he said. "The characters in this play are trying to find themselves, so it seems to work with our idea about a theater of exploration."

Written in 2000 by Pulitzer-Prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire, the play tells the story of titular protagonist, Kimberly, who is afflicted with progeria, or "advanced aging disorder." At the age of 16, she's physically reached the end of her lifespan.

The dark comedy follows Kimberly's exploits dealing with her own dysfunctional family, not to mention the obvious hardships of looking like a retiree as a high-school sophomore.

"The title comes from an anagram of her name," Tanner said. "So the idea is that you can arrange things in the show and make them your own."
