The UI has concluded its review into the conduct of its researchers who wrote an article printed in the medical journal Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine that was eventually retracted, university officials announced on Thursday.
In a statement, Meredith Hay, the UI vice president for Research, said the university had opened its own inquiry into the journal article, which was written by Sebastian Schulz-Stübner, a clinical assistant professor of anesthesia, John Hata, a clinical associate professor of anesthesia, and Angela Henszel, who no longer works at the UI.
"It is our conclusion in this case that [Schulz-Stübner] had simply exhibited a basic lack of knowledge of research methodology," Hay wrote in her announcement.
The university's review concluded that, while there was research methodology error in the piece, no evidence supported accusations of research misconduct, intent to publish false data, nor desire to mislead or misrepresent findings, Hay said.
The article - titled "A New Rule for Femoral Nerve Blocks" - was published in the September-October 2005 issue of the publication. Upon its original retraction, the journal said the article was retracted at the request of its editor-in-chief and Schulz-Stübner, who was the primary author.
In its decision to withdraw the piece, the journal wrote, "the Editorial Board of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine believe the authors have committed scientific misconduct that affects the validity of the study's results and conclusions."
Hay said the UI will require Schulz-Stübner to attend a program titled "Responsible Conduct of Research," and that the university would appoint a senior physician/scientist mentor to review all of his subsequent publications, among other steps.
All three authors had published other articles prior to the appearance of the one in question, an online database query shows. None of the researchers involved in the case could be reached for comment Thursday night.
