Women’s golf finishes strongly

BY DI STAFF | AUGUST 24, 2009

Although the Iowa women’s golf team has struggled with consistency, each golfer posted career bests this spring.

What you should know

After finishing fifth at the Big Ten championships this past spring, there have been encouraging signs for the team.

“I have felt all year that we have been one round away from a good tournament finish,” head coach Kelly Crawford said.

The golfers have worked hard all season on their technique, as well as the mental game.

Improvements have also been seen in the physical work the team has done.

“Our coaches have helped us tremendously throughout the year,” sophomore Laura Cilek said. “They help tune our swings, putting strokes, and help us learn how to make our way around the different courses.”

In four tournaments, the Hawkeyes finished 12th, sixth, eighth, and 12th.

“We are really close to having a breakout season,” Crawford said. “We just haven't put it together all at one time.”

Whom you should know

With the senior-duo and consistent top-two finishers for Iowa, Tyrette Metzendorf and Becky Quinby exiting after the season, the team will look to youth. The team is excited about the group of incoming freshmen, but current freshman Chelsea Harris will be there to lead the Hawkeyes alongside sophomores Cilek, Coopman, and junior Alison Cavanaugh. At the Eagle Landing Invitational this spring Harris carded a season-best 237. She also tied for 27th at the Indiana University Invitational, a season best.

“We went through some struggles, but we are going into Big Tens with a positive attitude,” she said.

Main rival

Besides Iowa State, Harris said, the only rival is the course the team is playing on.

Metzendorf and Quinby led the Hawkeyes all year long.

Where they finished:

• Eagle Landing Invitational: T-27th, T-31st

• Baylor Spring Invitational: Both T-10th (co-Big Ten Player of the Week)

• Indiana University Invitational: T-18th, T-14th

• Lady Buckeye Spring Invitational: T-44th, T-48th
