Out of the armchair, into the fray

The UI offers 30 different intramural sports, with many of them including different leagues. All one needs to participate in most sports is a signed waiver, a valid student ID, and a small monetary fee.

Popular sports and advice

All programs are popular, but Associate Director of Intramurals Mike Widen said flag football and basketball are the most popular — each usually has around 200 teams. Both sports are sponsored by Powerade and Champion, he said, and videos and photos of students in action are featured at www.cbsintramurals.com/iowa.

Widen “without a doubt” recommends participating in intramurals to incoming freshmen.

“It’s a great way to meet new people,” he said. “A lot of freshmen who come in and stay in the residence halls form teams with the guys or girls on their floor, and it’s a great way to get to know those people. It’s also a good way to get active in the University of Iowa community.”

What students say

That opinion is one shared by many students who compete in intramurals as well. Junior Dan Wallace and senior Christina Brown, teammates on an indoor soccer team, agreed that intramurals give people a good chance to meet new people.

Brown, who also participated in co-ed basketball, enjoyed the competitive aspect of playing as well.

“It was awesome, because I haven’t been able to play since high school,” she said. “So it was just nice to get back on the court, have fun, and feel like you’re part of a team.”

Almost everyone can find a sport he or she is interested in, Widen said, and two more programs — a punt-pass-kick competition during Welcome Week and a bench press contest in March — will be added to the lineup in the next academic year.
