Figuring out the beloved U-bill

BY DI STAFF | AUGUST 24, 2009

University Cashier Marty Miller has some advice for incoming freshmen regarding their university billing: Figure it out ahead of time.

“Make sure you have your financial aid ready well in advance of your first bill, so you don’t run into past due amounts,” he said.

It’s crucial for students to discuss financial situations with their parents to avoid confusion about which party is responsible for paying the bills, Miller said.

And that payment can all be done electronically now after UI officials stopped mailing paper U-bills to students and parents in February. For students to see their U-bills, they should log on to ISIS, click “Student Records,” then click “University Bill” under the “Finances and Billing” section.

The UI had two reasons for changing to electronic billing: the cost of printing mail and saving paper, Miller said.

Though, UI student Emily Burker said, she tries not to charge anything on her card unless it’s absolutely necessary, she does charge Information Technology Centers.

“I’ve given up on my printer,” she said. “I think it’s cheaper to use the ITC.”

Some popular places students charge purchases to their UI identification cards:

• University Book Store

• Iowa Book — if making a charge account with the store

• River Room

• Main Library’s Food for Thought

• Pat’s Diner in the Pappajohn Business Building

Students cannot charge anything to their ID cards anywhere off-campus, except for Iowa Book
