Pledging their time and energy

BY DI STAFF | AUGUST 24, 2009

Making connections with other students can be easier through greek life. It can provide you with service opportunities, friends, fun events, and more. It’s a popular choice for many students on campus.

So is it still possible to join?

• Sororities: UI student Treacy Weldon, the president of the UI Panhellenic Association, said most sororities have fewer members than their 110-member quota. That means they’re holding open bids for potential new members to join a chapter at any time. However, official recruitment dates occur twice during the year. Formal recruitment — the most popular way — begins one week prior to the start of fall classes, and informal recruitment takes place after winter break.

• Fraternities: Though fraternities recruit potential members year-round, chapters formally recruit men soon after fall classes begin, and informal recruitment takes place in January. Fall 2008 was the first year fraternities initiated formal recruitment during the third week of the semester, and that increased the number recruits, Sigma Nu member Dino Ranieri said.

“Being a part of a fraternity has given me the opportunity to take a lot of leadership positions. I plan on being a member for life.”
