Here at the multifaceted DI
Landing in front of your off-campus domicile or dorm door every morning, The Daily Iowan is the independent daily newspaper serving the UI and Iowa City communities since 1868 — and it’s in print, on TV, and on the web.
The ink on the page
The DI publishes four sections each weekday: Metro (campus and city news), Arts and Culture, Sports, and Opinions. A Daily Break page features cartoons, horoscopes, and events. And each Thursday, the paper prints 80 Hours, a segment devoted to previewing weekend arts and culture activities. During football season, the Pregame insert is also popular.
A copy of the paper — which is consistently recognized nationally with Pacemaker awards and run in its majority by students — is distributed to every dorm room and across a wide swath of the local community. All news is updated frequently at the recently revamped dailyiowan.com.
“The Daily Iowan provides students with essential information,” 2009-10 Editor in Chief Kelsey Beltramea said. “We cover the news, the sports, and the events so students can best relate to the campus and be knowledgeable about what’s going on around them.”
The DI is also known for its strides in convergence, pushing for telling stories across numerous platforms — from print to video to photo to graphics and more.
On TV
Daily Iowan TV manages and produces shows five days a week during the school year. Newscasts can be seen on UITV — that’s Channel 4 in your dorm room — Sunday through Thursday at 9:30 p.m. It then reruns at 10:30 p.m., 12:30 a.m., 1:30 a.m., 7:45 a.m., and 8:45 a.m. You can also catch it on the DI ’s homepage at dailyiowan.com.
“It’s fast-paced, interesting, a great place to meet new people, and offers real-world experience,” said Daily Iowan TV Executive Producer Jillian Petrus.
The team is consistently recognized in broadcast competitions.
