Easy to maintain religious ties
Keeping in touch with one’s faith while transitioning to college or joining a religious group in college is easy on the UI campus.
Religion on campus
There are more than 25 religious groups and organizations at the UI.
One group with a membership of more than 250 students is Campus Crusade for Christ. It gathers each week for worship and small group Bible studies.
“[Campus Crusade] was good for me because I found people who kept me accountable,” UI student Danielle Rahja said. “The campus got kind of smaller when I met the people there who made me feel really welcome.”
Another active Christian group at the UI is 24-7 at Parkview Church, 15 Foster Road. A program called Verve in the group is geared toward freshmen, meeting on Mondays to play games and learn about God, according to its website.
“I like going to the gathering for everyone because it’s just a good time to leave the stress of school behind and be with people who share the common love for Christ,” said UI student Joseph Beitelspacher, a member of 24-7.

Religion in the community
In addition to numerous churches and congregations surrounding the campus, an Association of Campus Ministers from 13 local churches offer pastoral care and counseling to students.
“We have an unusual sensitivity and respect for differing religions and beliefs here at the UI and in the Iowa City community,” UI religious-studies Professor Ralph Keen said.
