Much more than tailgate city
![]() |
You’ve heard of the football games and tailgates, and — of course — the plentiful number of bars downtown and elsewhere.
Doesn’t do it for you? You’re in luck. Contrary to what some may have led you to believe, there are other things to do.
“If students feel as if they have no other options than to go to go to the bars, then they aren’t looking very hard,” UI student Jen Pray said.
Recreational
Iowa City has a number of public parks within walking distance of campus — including City Park, Terrell Mill (and the Skateboard Park), and Hickory Hill.
“It’s nice to have a park across [the river] from Mayflower to play tennis and other outdoor activities,” UI student Anna Faber said.
For a bit of physical activity in a social atmosphere, the UI has a program called Night Games —a monthly event featuring free food and a variety of sports and activities.
Shopping
You can try Coral Ridge Mall — take the Coralville bus from the Pentacrest — and hit up the typical stores: Gap, Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister, Express, Best Buy, Barnes & Noble. The food court features a Chick-Fil-A and Panda Express, and you can munch on your lunch while watching the ice skaters or a hockey game.
But don’t neglect the downtown business owners. There’s a bunch of downtown boutiques to check out. Just look for Catherine’s, Hebe, Active Endeavors, Dulcinéa, and Ewers men store, among others.
Bowling and movies
You’ll have to go off campus a bit to get to a bowling alley or movie theaters that show Hollywood’s newest releases.
Check out Colonial Bowling Lanes, 2253 Old Highway 218 S., which features cosmic bowling, putt-putt golf, arcade games, and a mini restaurant and billiards area.
To see any box-office hit, you can visit Sycamore Cinema 12, Sycamore Mall, or Coral Ridge Theater, Coral Ridge Mall.
