Making you feel welcome with a week
![]() |
Did you know there’s a week completely dedicated to orient you to university life?
It’s the UI Welcome Week, and it’s scheduled for Aug. 22 to 28. The weeklong series of events — offering everything from free food to information about jobs and student organizations — is sponsored by the UI and various Iowa City organizations.
“It’s really a week to get out of your residence hall and meet a lot of people,” said student organizer Marvin Haiman.
Highlights
The events are set to start with a kickoff at the IMU that includes games and free food.
Other highlights will include the President’s Block Party and the Taste of Iowa City, which sold more than 14,000 tickets last year, said Tara Edberg, the coordinator of campus programs and student activities.
Most events are free, including the Taste of Iowa City, where students will be given a limited number of tickets to purchase food from various Iowa City vendors.
Take advantage of it
It isn’t often you’re handed something for free, and students agree the week is a worthwhile way to start their time here.
“I think Welcome Week was a good experience,” said UI student Kevin Lindenberg. “It had a lot of activities, and it really gave freshmen the opportunity to interact with other freshmen and people they have never met before.”
Welcome Week events
The schedule is still being completed, but here’s the tentative slate:
• Aug. 22: Welcome Week Kickoff at IMU
• Aug. 23: Convocation and President’s Block Party
• Aug. 24: Campus Informational Booths
• Aug. 25: Campus Informational Booths, Recreational Services Kickoff Classic, and Welcome Week Lecture
