Getting a job not life of Job

BY DI STAFF | AUGUST 24, 2009

Chances are you’re going to need some money to help pay for your schooling here — or at the very least, you’ll need some extra cash for the weekends.

But you’re probably not too familiar with Iowa City. Are there even jobs available? How do you find one?

Enter Jobnet

The UI’s Jobnet — a web-based service that advertises job openings on and off campus — is the place a lot of employers post job openings to attract prospective employees, giving students a lot to choose from, said Cynthia Seyfer, an associate director of Student Financial Aid.

Jobnet is updated every weekday, and Seyfer encourages students to check the website daily.

“There could be times when there are several hundred jobs out there,” she said.

Jobnet offers two types of jobs:

• Normal part-time, hourly jobs

• Work-study positions, which requires meeting federal requirements through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid

• In the past 12-month period, Jobnet offered 1,428 on-campus jobs and 2,073 off-campus jobs. It features many jobs that are within walking distance for students or on a bus route.

Avoid the monotony

And for your first year, just having something to break up the homework time can be nice.

Freshmen “may not be as concerned about getting a job that will help them develop résumé as they are finding a job that is close to their residence halls,” Seyfer said, and learning how to balance work and school is an important quality.

‘As long as you have good skills with budgeting your time for the day, it is no problem getting all of your school work done while having a job at the same time.’
