Iowa City filled with treasures

Much of Iowa City’s fun lies outside the downtown bars in some unique local businesses. Those who branch out on will find some fun, little-known treasures of Iowa City. Look for the corresponding number on the locator map to find out how to get to these places.
1. Home Ec Workshop, 207 N. Linn
Inspired by home-economics classes, this hip fabric shop combines specialty threads and sewing classes with an old style bakery and beverage bar.
2. That’s Rentertainment, 211 N. Linn
Though its small size is misleading, this centrally located video-rental store offers the widest range of movies on DVD and VHS, including great foreign cult, horror, and queer cinema sections. It’s a super short walk from the east dorms, too.
“The best kept secret in Iowa City,” said renter T.J. Smith.

3. Revival, 117 E. College
This Pedestrian Mall boutique sells a wide range of used and new vintage-inspired clothing and accessories, along with homemade cupcakes at the checkout counter. Flavors range from caramel and toffee to peanut butter and jelly.
“We try to keep our selection unique and modern, and many of our pieces are inspired by ’60s and ’70s trends,” said store owner Sheila Davisson.
4. Sweet Livin’ Antiques & Art, 940 S. Gilbert Court
This little antique shop offers a great selection of used records, among other items.
5. Iowa City Bike Library, 408 E. College St.
At this nonprofit bike shop, residents can rent bikes for affordable prices ranging from $5 kids’ bikes to adult bikes priced from $20 to $80. You get your money back when the bike is checked back in, but if you decide to keep the bike, the deposit money is used to purchase more equipment to keep the business running.
