Editorial: IC ‘de-escalation techniques’ shortsighted

City Manager Tom Markus addressed the Iowa City City Council Thursday in a memo regarding the controversial arrest last month of a 15-year old African American male at the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center, where a police officer appears to use excessive force in the detaining of the juvenile. The incident on June 17 stemmed from a police call, which authorities have released as “juveniles causing problems and not listening to staff.”

Cervantes: Does it really take a village?

In an incident that occurred last week at Marcy’s Diner in Portland, Maine, Darla Neugebaur, owner of the diner, snapped at a two-year-old girl who had been crying for roughly an hour. According to USA Today, Neugebaur stated that she “slammed [her] hands on the table and said, ‘this needs to stop.’” The little girl then ceased her crying.

As a temporary expat/foldable currency case, my wallet tends to romanticize the benefits it receives as a foreigner in China: unlimited drinks for $16, USD, and only available to foreign wallets (as I learned after the fact), Seven-course meals for $6, $15 cell phone data plans, the 50-cent subway rides, and the 20-cent steamed dumplings.
