The Iowa women’s swimming team started out the Big Ten Championships at Ohio State Wednesday by breaking a school record for the 200-medley relay.

The relay team of Allison Orvis, Emma Sougstad, Carly O’Brien, and Olivia Kabacinski finished with a time of 1:39.18, narrowly missing a full second faster than the previous record of 1:40.12, which was set at last year’s Big Tens.

"I'm really proud of the way we started tonight," head coach Marc Long said in a release.  “The 200 medley relay got us off to a fast start breaking a school record and the 800-freestyle relay kept the pace going."

The team ended up placing eighth in the event falling short to Northwestern, Purdue, Penn State, Minnesota, Ohio State, Michigan and Wisconsin which came in first with a time of 1:36.82.

The team then went on to place seventh in the 800 freestyle relay, which also was the last event of the night, finishing with a time of 7:12.86. Indiana ended up placing in first with a time of 6:59.10 setting a Big Ten record.

"Becky was really flying on that opening leg of the 800-free,” Long said in a release. "She led us off great and crushed her old record. Now we just need to get ready for tomorrow for some more swimming and diving.”

As of Wednesday the team has 42 points placing them seventh so far in the Big Ten tournament. Michigan leads the scoreboard with 68 points followed by Wisconsin with 66 points.

The team is set to compete in the 200-yard freestyle relay, 500-yard Freestyle, 200-yard individual and the 50-yard freestyle in tomorrow’s finals along with 1-meter Diving.

The Hawkeyes hit the water again Thursday at 11:00 a.m. for preliminaries and 5:30 p.m. for finals.
