Iowa State Classic — Ames

The mid- and long-distance runners, along with some field athletes, traveled to Ames over the weekend to compete in a two-day event at the Iowa State Classic. No team scores were tallied at the meet.

The Hawks clocked nine personal bests at the event. Most notably, Kevin Lewis became the fastest Hawkeye ever in the men’s 5,000 meters, crossing the line at 13:43.70 to earn fourth place. The previous school record was 13:56.46. Lewis’ time is now ranked first in the Big Ten.

Junior Will Tubel ran for a new career best time of 1:49.40 in the men’s 800, finishing ninth. His time is fourth in the Big Ten and is the fifth-fastest time in school history.

Both in the men and women’s 400, junior Mitch Wolff and freshman Sheridan Champe improved on their personal bests. Wolff clocked 48.12 to earn sixth, while Champe crossed the line in 58.05 to finish ninth.

Tyson Invitational — Fayetteville, Arkansas

Iowa took part on Feb. 13-14 in the Tyson Invitational, where participants have combined for 30 NCAA titles in past years. The Hawkeyes competed against several top-ranked teams, including Florida, Texas A&M, and Arkansas.

Although the competition was fierce, Iowa attempted to hold its own against some of the top track programs in the country.

The Hawkeyes had top-15 finishes in four events, coming from Babatunde Amosu (second) and Klyvens Delaunay (11th) in the triple jump, James Harrington (15th) in the men’s 200-meter, and the 1,600-meter relay group of Lake Kwaza, Elexis Guster, MonTayla Holder, and Mahnee Watts (11th).

The squad will split competitions again next weekend at the UNI-Dome Open in Cedar Falls and the Alex Wilson Invitational in South Bend, Indiana.
