Sophomore Emma Sougstad has been named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week after an additional set of record-breaking times against Iowa State this past weekend. This is her second Big Ten swimming recognition of the season; her first came after she posted a pair of NCAA B cut times when the Hawkeyes traveled to Minnesota in October.

“I am just going to keep working hard to get those A cuts and try to get as low of a seed as I can for NCAAs,” Sougstad said after her races in the Hawkeye Invitational.

Her experience has allowed Sougstad to lead the Hawkeyes in the record books for her second-consecutive season.

This past weekend, Sougstad swam in four events against the Cyclones and won all four, in addition to breaking two school records in the 100 and 200 breaststroke.

Her 100 breaststroke time of 1:00.14 was a new personal best and a NCAA qualifying B cut. She was also able to qualify with a record setting victory in the 200 breaststroke, finishing at 2:11.71.

Her leadership has led to breakthrough swims in the second half of the season, and her achievements will make her name hard to forget.

“No expectations,” Sougstad said. “Just race the person next to you.”
