From Iowa City shops to reality TV, tattoos and piercings have gone beyond marks of rebellion and into the realm of art and fashion, especially for young women. But some "body art" trends may not be built to last.


The return of Soul Fest

The second-annual Iowa Soul Festival will celebrate African-American culture in Eastern Iowa with music, art, and food. This year's headliner is Al Jarreau, a seven-time Grammy winner and University of Iowa alumnus.


Retta takes the stage

On Saturday, comedian Marietta Sirleaf — known by her stage name Retta — will appear in Iowa City. Many know her as Donna Meagle from the hit NBC show "Parks and Recreation," others may know her from "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," or from her Comedy Central special.


The Englert welcomes Louis Anderson

Comedy Central named him as "One of the 100 Greatest Stand Up Comedians of All Time" and now Louie Anderson will bring his winning brand of light-hearted humor to the Englert Theatre Friday at 8 p.m., joined by local performer Megan Gogerty.


Battle of the Bands rages on

The Yacht Club has been a musical battleground every Thursday night in September as bands attempt to win over crowds by playing their original music. Tonight, the bands Live Broadcast, Crystal City, Surrounded By Giants, and Alpha Bet will face off at 8 p.m.


The 'Worstest' comedy in town

The number of ways comedy can be presented is almost as varied as the material it shares. Touching on as many funny bases it possibly can, the Worstest Generation comedy collective will host a comedy variety show at the Mill Saturday.


Reading from the world stage

Tonight, the UI Theatre Department in conjunction with the International Writing Program will present Global Express, a series of play readings by the International Writing Program residents. UI actors will read excerpts of these plays to an audience with the playwrights present.

Review: Retro Gaming Championship

Humbly situated in the Hillel House, the Game Geek's Retro Gaming Championship 2014 drew a sizable crowd. It was nowhere near so much of a crowd as the Hawkeyes' game against Iowa State but still an impressive turnout for what is considered a small gaming community.


Graywolf Poetry Tour to stop at Prairie Lights

At 7 p.m. Friday, Prairie Lights bookstore will welcome poets Matthea Harvey, Jim Moore, and Katie Ford, who will read samples of their worksIf the Tabloids Are True What Are You?,Underground, and Blood Lyrics.
