Brewing up much more than beer

Backpocket Brewery's 15,000 square-foot facility boasts a large beer garden complete with a fire pit, grill, and yard games to play.


Hitting the pavement

Nothing is more primed for a good sale than the great downtown Iowa City concrete. Starting today, the tables will be set, the racks and tents assembled, and signage hanged for the start of the annual Sidewalk Sales.


Iowa City opens up

Back in March a small committee made up of Iowa City programs came together with a new idea. Pursuing something vibrant and distinctive to Iowa City, the group found their way to a program that could show off the local talent. A program called Open City.

Boyhood is a film about a few people's maturation, which incredibly becomes something more: a statement of who we are as a people.


Wild kids in the house (sort of)

For two years in a row, Wild Child has been named the Best Indie Band at the SXSW music festival in Austin, Texas. At 9 p.m. Sunday Wild Child will play at Gabe’s, 330 E. Washington, with opening act Teen Daad.


Moonstruck in Iowa City

Moonrakers Gastropub, 126 E. Washington, is a small, friendly-looking restaurant and bar tucked above One Twenty Six. The place has a slight, almost unnoticeable James Bond theme to it.


Much more than going ape

Rather than take sides in an easy-to-understand conflict, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes screenwriters Mark Bomback, Rick Jaffa, and Amanda Silver have decided to upend the normal structure of a big-budget action film to present what is essentially a mediation on diplomacy and politics.


Drink of the Week: Millstream's German Pilsner

It seemed fitting to honor Germany’s World Cup win with a German beer, brewed out of one of the most historic German settlements in the United States: Iowa’s Amana Colonies.


Smashing Game Geeks

Smash League is a day of “casual” play primarily consisting of a double elimination tournament of  Super Smash Bros, Nintendo's popular crossover fighting game featuring characters such as Mario and Donkey Kong duking it out.
