Upcoming play examines bullying

When Working Group Theater was commissioned by Hancher to write a play about bullying, Jennifer Fawcett didn't plan on composing two plays. But shortly after beginning her research on the sensitive issue, she had an epiphany — the effects of bullying do not happen in a vacuum that only affect the child. Parents, teachers, school administrators, and even state legislators grapple with the issue and work together to try to bring it to an end.


FilmScene welcomed 10,000th customer

Evan James was hanging out in the Iowa City Public Library, 123 S. Linn St., on Tuesday when he decided to attend the 5:45 p.m. showing of Cousin Jules at the FilmScene cinema, 118 E. College St. Minutes later, he bought a ticket for the French documentary, leaned against the lobby wall, and was promptly startled by a chorus of noisemakers blown by theater staff.


Operetta takes comedic spin

Upon hearing the phrase "German opera," most would not immediately think of a comedy. This, however, is precisely the case with Die Fledermaus, a farce featuring royalty, crime, and love set to music.


Local band will fire up fans

Fire Sale is no stranger to Iowa City and the energy downtown can bring. The band members have played together since middle school and performed one of its first live performances on the Pedestrian Mall.
