Mark Twain Elementary went into lockdown Wednesday after the Iowa City Police Department and the Division of Criminal Investigation were conducting an investigation at the 1600 block of Spruce Ct.

As officials conducted the investigation, a suspect fled westbound towards Mark Twain Elementary. The school is located less than half a mile away from the initial investigation site.

An ICPD officer was near the scene as the suspects fled. The school went on lockdown at roughly 2:50 p.m as a part of the safety protocol, and officers assisted students as they left the school.

The suspect was an adult, black male.
