Editorial: Legalize medical marijuana

The United States has had a long and storied history with drug use and abuse. From the Prohibition to the War on Drugs, policymakers have sought to ban potentially harmful substances for some time now, with questionable results. But sentiment seems to be changing regarding the medicinal benefits of an oft-vilified drug: marijuana.

Beall: Paul Ryan's Iowa problem

Rep. Paul Ryan has gotten to the heart of what is plaguing the U.S. political system. It turns out that it's Iowa.  During his first visit to the Hawkeye State since his failed vice-presidential bid in 2012, Ryan joined Gov. Terry Branstad to celebrate the latter's "Birthday Bash" this week and chastised the state's voters.

Guest column: Change the language of sexual assault

In the past week, I have opened my email twice to find a "timely warning" about a sexual assault on the University of Iowa campus. In November, there were three such warnings on Nov. 4, 14, and 18 and two reports of sexual assaults on July 16 and Aug. 26.
