Editorial: 21-ordinance has worked

The debate over Iowa City's 21-only ordinance is one of those issues that just won't die - we keep having the same conversations over and over again. This latest round of voting, which will occur on Nov. 5, was brought about by a petition filed against the law by the owner of the Union Bar and a manager at Martinis.

It's always important, even in the darkest moments, to keep a sense of humor. It's cliched, but true that life can be hard, cruel, and punishing, and if you don't attempt to mine some sort of levity out of even the worst of circumstances, you'll end up spending most of your time curled up in the fetal position.

Last weekend, the University of Northern Iowa crowned a homecoming queen and king like usual, a traditional element of both high school and collegiate homecoming activities. But something was different this time. This year, UNI crowned its first ever transgender homecoming queen.
