Editorial: End the all-male court

Last month, the Iowa Supreme Court made a rare move by announcing that it would reconsider the case, without any new evidence being proposed, of Melissa Nelson - a dental assistant in Webster County who was fired in 2010 for being "irresistibly attractive" and, thus, a threat to her boss' marriage. If there were a female judge on the Iowa Supreme Court panel, the outcome of Nelson's case may have been different.

An article in Sunday's Des Moines Register claimed "the recession slammed Iowa's wealthiest residents the hardest of any income group." But the Register's claim is true only in the sense that trading in a Lexus for a Toyota is a harder hit than trading a junker for a bus pass.

On July 12, the Texas Legislature passed House Bill 2, a bill that prevents abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy and has effectively shut down all but five of the 42 women's health clinics because they do not meet the requirements to be a surgical center and do not have the finances to upgrade or relocate. Democrats proposed 20 amendments to the bill. All were rejected.
