Re: A lesson from Adams and Jefferson

Have you actually read the opinion the court handed down? I was at the U.S. Supreme Court the day it was released. I happened to be there on vacation. If you read it, it pretty much says that when the original ruling was made, there was blatant evidence that voter discrimination was happening. At the time, they had to go against the Constitution to correct a wrong that the state government could not or would not enforce. So, to preserve everyone’s right to vote, federal law was made to trump the state law. Now, many years later, the same evidence for discrimination does not exist. There is a lot of data that the justices waded through to substantiate their opinion. I invite you to read the entire opinion.

Many things struck me during my visit to the Supreme Court, but the one that stood out the most was how seriously justices take their jobs. They do not make their rulings based on whim. How that court operates gives me renewed faith in the structure of our government. It’s not perfect, but it’s pretty good.

Re: IC a model midsize town

I agree that the open spaces in most areas of Iowa City are wonderful. The major problem regarding open space is that there will not be any available downtown when “Moenville” is completed.
