Editorial: Let 21-only stand

A pair of Iowa City bar operators - Martinis owner George Wittgraf and Union Bar manager Josh Erceg - submitted to the city a petition to reverse the 21-only ordinance that has barred 19- and 20-year-olds from Iowa City's bars after 10 pm since 2010. The petitioners should set aside their quest to do away with the ordinance. The current law should stand.

Overton: Widening the gap

Unless lawmakers act by July 1, interest rates on federal subsidized student loans will double from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent, according to a report from the Congressional Budget Office. These loans make up one-fourth of all new student loans. If interest rates on subsidized loans jump, it will come at a particularly bad time and hit the most vulnerable students extremely hard.

Guest Column: Taskim Square is not Istanbul

Before arriving in Turkey, I researched the situation in Istanbul extensively. Almost every foreign press article that I read or television report that I watched made it seem like the entire city of Istanbul was rioting, and that no place was safe from the tear gas and aggressive actions of police against rioters. However, when I arrived, I saw no such danger.
