An Iowa City man has been accused of driving under the influence.

Derek Strom, 21, 1225 S. First Ave., was charged Wednesday with second-offense OWI.

According to a Iowa City police complaint, Strom was stopped for tailgating the vehicle in front of him. Upon contact, police reportedly noticed a strong smell of ingested alcohol coming from the car.

Strom said he was the most sober of all of the people in the car, which included two 20-year old females. He had bloodshot and watery eyes and admitted to having drunk “at the lake” earlier in the day.

During preliminary breath testing, he registered a .163 blood-alcohol content and was taken to the police station for DataMaster testing.

Second-offense OWI is an aggravated misdemeanor.
