Input on high-rise needed

Is a 10- to 20-story high-rise at College and Gilbert Street “sensitive” to the Gilbert Street Recreation Center and two-story residential neighborhoods? The Iowa City Comprehensive Plan says it should be. The City Council wants a 20-story high-rise on Gilbert Street.

Why are seven city councilors considering giving $14 million in Iowa City taxpayer money for a down payment? Couldn’t we all build something with this kind of subsidy for the rich?

New Pioneer Co-op would be best anchor store at a College and Gilbert project no taller than a five to seven stories. We need an energy-sustainable building with a majority of workforce housing.

City Planning and Zoning requests your input on the new update for the comprehensive plan at http://www.icgov.org/?id=2157.

The College/Gilbert project deflects city direction away from intended Riverfront Crossing Project.

Write your input to city planning sarah-walz@iowa-city.org by April 1 before zoning consideration of the College/Gilbert project 7 p.m. April 4 at City Hall.

Come wearing Green for Sustainability.
