Latham not running for Senate

Rep. Tom Latham, R-Iowa, announced Wednesday he would not seek election to U.S. Senate, according to his chief of staff.

Latham was rumored to be considering running for the Senate seat that will be vacated by retiring Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa.

Latham was first elected in 1994, and he defeated Rep. Leonard Boswell, D-Iowa, in 2012. This was after Iowa lost a House seat in reapportionment.

Rep. Bruce Braley, D-Iowa, announced on Feb. 7 his intentions to seek the open seat.

No Republicans have announced their intention to run for the seat, and Latham’s chief of staff said it is unlikely for him to endorse anyone in a primary.

“He’s never endorsed anyone before, and it’s hard to be convinced of a situation that would break that,” James Carstensen said. “He’s not a big fan of endorsements.”
