Local man arrested after assaulting police officer

A Muscatine man was arrested after allegedly punching his mother and aunt after taking a walk.

Michael Van Winkle, 31, was accused Sunday with assault causing bodily injury and assault causing serious injury.

Johnson County deputies responded to a report of a man beating his mother and aunt. Van Winkle went for walk into Lone Tree and returned shortly. He then allegedly attacked his aunt by pushing her down and then reportedly started punching his mother. He stopped momentarily to start cutting himself with a knife. He then allegedly resumed attacking his mother and aunt without the knife. He reportedly punched his mother in the face, causing her to have a bloody mouth, and knocked out a tooth. According to law enforcement, Van Winkle repeatedly punched his aunt on the head, causing swelling, bleeding, and cuts.

Assault causing bodily injury is a serious misdemeanor. Assault causing serious injury is a Class-D felony.
