The Iowa men’s track and field team saw performances to be proud of, as well as events tgat the team needs to work on, at the Black and Gold Intrasquad meet on Dec. 1.

Senior captain Ethan Holmes set an unofficial personal best time in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.94 seconds. Sophomore Brennan Davey had a time of 1:19.81 to finish in first place in the 600 meters.

“Those are the things you want to see,” said Larry Wieczorek, the director of Hawkeye track and field. “You want to see veteran athletes coming in and being pretty close to where they were last year.”

The biggest surprise of the meet came from freshman Matt Butler, who finished first place in the mile, 0.09 of a second ahead of 2012 Iowa graduate and Hawkeye-record-holder Eric Sowinski.

Other winners were Tevin-Cee Mincy in the 60 meters with a time of 6.91 seconds and Ryan Weir with a time of 2:30.22 in the 1,000 meters.

Wieczorek said even with the good times, there were still places where the team needs work.

“The individuals can see that they need work in certain areas, and they’ve got to get better,” he said. “And we as coaches can see where the team has to get better. I think it’s enlightening for all of us.”

Kyle Reid reached 4.85 meters in the pole vault, and Klyvens Delaunay leaped 6.36 meters in the long jump to place first.

Sophomore Gabe Hull won the shot put with a put of 16.50 meters. Senior Ben Stancombe had a throw of 16.51 meters to place first in the weight throw.

“There are some people I would like to see a little bit more out of,” Wieczorek said. “On the other hand, there are a lot of bright spots where you feel good. We know we have a lot of work to do as a total team.”

The squad’s first official meet will be Jan. 12, when the Hawkeyes host the Iowa Open.
