A water main broke Tuesday afternoon, partially flooding streets near the intersection of Burlington and Dubuque St.

Jude Moss, an Iowa City Wastewater Division representative, confirmed the breakage and said officials were unaware of the cause around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

"It's a short piece of main, and the water is shut down at this time," she said. "One business, West Bank, is out of water, and they are investigating the stub to see what caused it."

Moss said the water main stub, a shorter piece of main, runs north up Dubuque Street from Burlington and Dubuque Streets and has an attached fire hydrant.

Water mains cannot be checked regularly, but Moss said the city has seen more water main breaks this year.

"Due to the dry weather, the ground tends to shift," she said. "We have had more main breaks this year because of that …"

City officials were unable to be reached for an update Tuesday evening.
