Sharing Iowa's goodwill

Tuesday is Phil's Day at the University of Iowa, a day when we celebrate the generosity that makes the UI such an excellent institution. In many ways, our university's entire mission is about giving — it's about professors sharing their knowledge with students, students sharing their talents with our communities, and the entire university community sharing its teaching, discovery, and service with our society.

Now is not the time to increase interest rates

A 2007 plan that steadily lowered the interest rate on federal Stafford Loans is expiring at a time when borrowers are struggling under the weight of rising college costs, tight family finances, and economic uncertainty. When time runs out on July 1, student-loan interest rates will double for almost 8 million students, from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent.

Do well by doing good

While I had the benefit of growing up in a family where charitable giving was part of my early life's experience, I still vividly remember a moment — from the spring of my senior year at the University of Iowa College of Law — that challenged me to do as much of my own charitable giving as possible.

Quiet daze in cliché

So who knew Mitt Romney was an expert on cookies? I'm pretty sure most of us had the idea he was an expert on air-tight dog kennels perched on car roofs and firing people, then bragging about it.
