IC flies are bugging me

I've been extremely paranoid lately, and it's because of all the flies. Walk into any of Iowa City's fine restaurants and cafés and you will surely have your face, arms, legs, and food assaulted by the Musca domestic. If you're lucky, the house fly's smaller counterpart — the fruit fly, which frequents coffeehouses — will take a crash landing into your ear and cause you to shout profanity while spanking the side of your face in front of all the quiet studious patrons. Surprisingly, though, no one will react. They've all done the same thing.

What is this fly phenomena and why is it going unchecked by businesses in Iowa City? I cannot be the only one who cringes at the thought of insects crawling all over silverware and plates in the depths of some larvae-infested kitchen. It's disgusting. On numerous occasions, I've chosen to take my food outside, simply to avoid dealing with bugs. Is that ironic?

For all of those establishments that have yet to take care of the problem: I challenge you to Google Image "house fly laying eggs." If it does not provoke you to act, then we will know which businesses truly care about sanitation and which ones only clean when the health inspector comes rolling around.
