Where are the student-tailgaters?

In response to "Cops should use more discretion, less violence" (Sept. 29, dailyiowan.com):
My wife and I returned to Iowa City last weekend to go to the Iowa football game. We hadn't been in Iowa City for two years — since our daughter graduated.

On the morning of Sept. 24 on our walk to the game, my wife noted how quiet it was on campus. She was absolutely right. Where was the on-campus game-day enthusiasm that we remembered and enjoyed? It was very obvious that with law-enforcement officers on every corner that the partying and game-day festivities were being held elsewhere.

I am 62 years old and certainly don't condone drunkenness in public — but come on, Iowa City. Let these young people enjoy their college years, on campus, without fearing the people that are being paid to protect them. You can bet the young people who stopped to help the drunk on the sidewalk will think twice before calling the police for assistance the next time.
