K. Davis, A.J. Derby impress at spring scrimmage

The Iowa football team concluded its series of 15 spring practices with its annual Coca-Cola Spring Classic at Kinnick Stadium Saturday.
The squad started the day with drills and warm-up exercises before progressing to a controlled scrimmage that lasted about 50 minutes. Iowa concluded the day with a 15-minute scrimmage featuring live tackling.
Junior wide receiver Keenan Davis was among the most impressive Hawkeyes on the field. The Cedar Rapids native made a few spectacular catches during the scrimmage, and appeared vastly improved.
He recorded 11 catches for 131 yards and one touchdown last season. This year, Davis is expected to start at receiver opposite senior Marvin McNutt.
Junior quarterback James Vandenberg said Davis' playmaking ability shouldn't come as a surprise.
"He's kind of been a hidden secret," Vandenberg said of Davis. "I've always wondered why nobody's really talked about him. He's a huge guy. huge hands. He's hard to guard.
"It's really nice being able to throw it to him. He's going to go up and get it, try and make a play on it no matter what."
Redshirt freshman quarterback A.J. Derby also looked comfortable running the offense when he had his opportunities. Outside speculation of a possible position change has seemingly followed the Iowa City native ever since he stepped foot on campus, but head coach Kirk Ferentz insisted again Saturday that Derby is staying put.
"We see him as a quarterback," Ferentz said. "That's what he sees himself as, and we're on board with that 100 percent."
Additionally, Ferentz said no players were injured during Saturday's practice.
